The content of the TOEFL exam includes

The TOEFL or Test of English as a Foreign Language is an exam designed to measure the English communication abilities of non-native English speakers who wish to study in countries where English is the language of instruction. This includes international programs in Thailand

The current TOEFL exam is administered through an internet-based system called TOEFL iBT (Internet-Based Test). The TOEFL exam measures and evaluates English communication skills in all four areas: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

Sometimes, confusion can arise between the TOEFL and TOEIC exams. In general, the TOEFL exam measures English language skills for academic purposes, while the TOEIC exam measures English language skills for professional purposes in positions that frequently require international communication, such as airline receptionists.

Various Names for the TOEFL Exam

The TOEFL exam is available in various types and seems to have many names or codes ending with “TOEFL,” such as TOEFL iBT, TOEFL PBT, TOEFL ITP, and so on. Let’s take a look at the meaning of each acronym:

TOEFL PBT
the original TOEFL test format administered between 1964 and 2000, and still used in some areas where computer-based testing is not convenient. The PBT consists of Listening, Structure, and Reading sections with scores ranging from 310 to 677. The Writing section, known as TWE, is optional, and scores range from 0 to 6.

TOEFL CBT
CBT (Computer-Based Test): used between 2000 and 2005; it had the same content as the PBT but with the Writing section as a compulsory part. Scores range from 0 to 300.

TOEFL iBT
Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing – and includes some Integrated Tasks. Scores range from 0 to 120.

TOEFL ITP
tests purchased by organizations from ETS, or TOEFL exam organizers. It’s the same content as the PBT, but with an additional writing section (TWE). The ITP is used by institutions like MUIC for academic assessment purposes. Scores cannot be used outside of the administering institutions.

Reading
The TOEFL reading section typically includes 3-5 passages covering general topics from various university-level subjects. Test-takers must understand the content as a whole and answer questions in various formats, such as finding the main idea or predicting the author’s feelings. Additionally, test-takers must fill in blanks and make conclusions based on the content provided.

Listening
The TOEFL exam’s listening section consists of six passages, with each passage lasting around 3-5 minutes. The first two passages involve student conversations, with five questions for each passage. The remaining four passages are lectures or discussions, with six questions for each passage. Test-takers can listen to each passage only once and can take notes while doing so. The questions cover the details of the conversation, speaker attitudes, and opinions.

Speaking
The TOEFL speaking section requires test-takers to demonstrate their speaking abilities six times. The first two times involve answering general questions. The remaining four times are called Integrated Tasks, which require test-takers to listen to or read a short passage before speaking to answer a question. Evaluation in this section does not measure pronunciation or fluency, but rather the ability to convey understanding of what has been read or heard.

Writing
The TOEFL writing section consists of two tasks. The first task requires test-takers to write a general essay. The second task is the Integrated Task, which requires test-takers to read and listen to a lecture on the same topic to then speak about the relationship between what has been read and heard.
