Studying for the SAT is crucial for students who want to apply to international undergraduate programs both in Thailand and abroad. This is because SAT scores are required as part of the application process, although the score requirements vary for each university and program. Starting from March 2016, the SAT exam will shift to a new format (Redesigned SAT) in the United States. In Thailand, this new format will be used starting from the May 2016 test dates. Therefore, effective SAT prep requires adjusting the teaching format to align with the new redesigned exam.
Quest analyzed and compared the differences between the old and new SAT format for each exam section. The new SAT exam has two parts with a separate essay section, unlike the previous three-part format.
1. Passage-based Reading & Writing Test
The Reading and Writing sections are combined into one test (excluding the essay). Test-takers who need to submit an essay score must take a separate exam. In the Reading section, vocabulary words are easier and more commonly used in the passage. In the Writing section, questions focus on passage-based grammar with four answer choices instead of five
2. Math Test
The Math Test will be divided into two parts – one that allows the use of a calculator and one that doesn’t. Most questions will be longer, focusing on analysis and calculations within the text. The number of answer choices will be reduced from five to four. In both parts, there will be no penalty for wrong answers. The score range for each part is 200-800 with a total score of 1600 for both parts combined. The optional essay section will give test-takers 50 minutes to analyze a long passage of 600-700 words and write an explanation. The New SAT in Thailand will be administered four times per year in March, May, October, and December, and scores are valid for two years.
